Cove Island Park IBA on WNPR
The Important Bird Area at Cove Island Park was featured as an example of a restoration success story on WNPR on the Thursday October 17th edition of BirdNote. The show can be heard and downloaded here.

Before: In the mid-1950's the City of Stamford needed additional space to place their brush and other bulky waste from their public works project and drained and filled the salt marsh at the SW corner of the park. Here you can see neighborhood kids playing in the remnants of the drained tidal marsh and the beginnings of the 'fill' that would convert the area from wetlands to dry land.
After: For many years, several neighbors had been pressing the City to discontinue use of this coastal property as a 'stump dump' and convert it into a wildlife sanctuary. Subsequent to the recognition of the area as an IBA, the City successfully sought out funding to convert the area into a wildlife sanctuary. Today the Cove Island Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the great riches to rags to riches success stories for wildlife habitat on Long Island Sound.
